Senior Researcher Amy Cooter says that two recent verdicts—Alex Jones and Oath Keepers leader Stewart Rhodes—suggest that Americans’ tolerance for completely unfettered speech may be changing.

“It seems like jurors, maybe Americans as a whole, are kind of saying maybe we should push back on this, or at least recognize that speech has the ability to push people into violent action,” Cooter says.

In an opinion column for The Conversation, Cooter detailed her thoughts on shifting public sentiment and the dangers posed by militias.
